When I was a little RevGal, my Mother encouraged me to "eat your beets" because eating beets made one pretty, like Annette.

Memories like this make me smile.

What did your Mama tell you?

A word looked up is a word remembered.

Make yourself useful as well as ornamental.

"Take a Girl Scout bite" - if I thought I didn't like something.

"Eat around your plate".

We got a lot ot table-advice.

"Chairs are for people, not for things"

"Go ahead and have more (...mashed potatoes....cake....pancakes)...we'll still love you when you're big and fat"

Similar to Sherry's:
"Make yourself useful as well as decorative."
Also:
"Pretty is as pretty does."
I don't believe that related to beets!

My DAd use to say - eat it, it will put hair on your chest.

I never really got that since we were girls, but it was funny anyway.

Ha! ha!

"Eating burned toast will make your hair black and curly!" This is what was told to my mom when SHE was little and was very attractive because her favorite cousin had black curly hair.

I never WANTED black curly hair.

Also, hmm...

"remember the starving Armenians...," "don't put your hat on the bed..." "keep your elbows off the table."

Those who put their elbows on the table end up getting them WHACKED by the handle end of a knife. Not good.

If I did something truly appalling (or at least she thought it was):

"That's BARBARIC!"

My Mother said so many wise things I can hardly think of which to list:

"Read a book. TV's never as interesting."

"Play outside, the sunshine makes you healthy"

"Stand up nice and tall." even though she was five-foot-nothin'.

I think her comment was the precursor to reminding me to be tall and commanding.

My mom told me to eat my carrots so I could see in the dark like a cat.
Uh, cats don't eat carrots.

"Go out and get some fresh air. It's good for you."

"Luck is with the stupid." (An old Dutch saying that sounds better in the original language.)

My mother (and father) told me that I'd stay at the dinner table until I ate my beans or until bedtime, whichever was first.

I spent a lot of evenings at the table.

Stop singing at the table!

Back up from the tv. You will hurt your eyes.

Whistling girls and crowing hens shall surely come to no good ends!

That didn't bother me so much, because I'm not good at whistling, but not being allowed to hum hymns was more than I could bear (I'm still MUCH better at remembering tunes than lyrics, thank you).

Clean your plate. There are children starving in China.

If wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

And

You better stop doing that or your face will freeze like that.
