Oddities in the Sept.2006 ATLANTIC

Hanna Rosin, a smart writer, in an article about Rudy Giuliani learning to speak "evangelese" on p.39 top left column, end of paragraph writes, " Or they might just tap into a candidate’s general sense of optimism and contentment— a belief, rooted in Genesis and coloring all of life, that things happen for a reason. ‘Creationism Lite’, you might call it—an affirmational creed that carries it’s own emotional and intellectual style of thinking and speaking."

We get our sense of "things happening for a reason" from, primarily, Creationism?

Oops....

Following page 40, an advert for Capella University, shows a woman setting a table for a meal. She puts the dinner knife on a napkin on the WRONG SIDE OF THE PLATE! She may be learning a great deal from her online Ph.d program at C.U. but she hasn’t mastered table setting.

I wonder if the photo image had been flipped or reversed. Sometimes they do that. Wonder if it had been the right side then?

PPolarbear, I believe the correct side to place the knife it the right side.

The napkin goes with the fork. If it was with the knife, it was on the wrong side. Even if the photo was inverted. The knife goes on the right with the flat part of the blade away from the plate. The spoon goes next to the knife. The fork goes on the left with the napkin folded so that when it is placed on the lap it unfolds. The fork does not go on top of the napkin. If you are serving courses that require more than the traditional supper setting, then the forks go on the left in the order in which they are used (from the outside in). The knives go with the knives on the right, again in the order in which they are used. Same for spoons. Exception: dessert spoon and fork go at the top of the plate.

Perhaps I should leave the ministry and go into teaching ettiquette, if I could spell it.

Peace and love to Reformed Christians everywhere. Better to argue about place settings than sex. After all, God gave us sex. Miss Manners gave us table settings.

My mother had two dozen shrimp forks in her sterling pattern. I hope my brother and his wife have thrown some appropriate parties in order to use them. Is it better to argue about sterling than evolution?
