Casinos Rise Out of Katrina's Wreckage - New York Times
The New York Times keeps an eye on Mississippi's disaster relief almost every day. This article uses "Biloxi" and "Deadwood" in the same sentence. For those of you without HBO or DVD, "Deadwood" is the sharply profane and riveting series about a lawless old West town. I live next door to Biloxi.

It's distressing to read the comparison to Deadwood, but thank goodness the NYTimes is still reporting on the recovery. When I try to describe to people what I saw and how much remains to decide and to do, it is difficult to make the nature of the damage, the changes and the loss clear.
Yesterday's Oprah show had a riveting episode about the continuing suffering in New Orleans but also spent about half the hour on coastal Mississippi. Oprah kept making the point that people on the coast had been forgotten. It was heart-breaking.
Today I'll be watching as she opens "Angel Street", which is a street full of Habitat for Humanity Homes she underwrote that was built in Houston for Katrina evacuees. Many churches in Houston provided the volunteers who did the work, along with a number of corporations.
