Friday Rant Day

Welcome to Rant Day. Heave the rant into the comments section. Rants will be double-bagged then treated, according to EPA guidelines, for your future protection. All at no charge!

Opening Rant: Why didn't we take the War money and use it to develop alternate fuel sources? Think how much money we'd have for research and development. We'd be less dependent on oil by now. But nooooooooooo......

Your turn....

Of minor import in comparision, but how does the plumbing always KNOW when we are either going away or alternatively and even more drastically have a houseful of guests...Downstairs loo now leaking, and shower on go-slow.
Waiting for the plumber now, so I can get out to Greenbelt.

How about Pat Robertson comparing himself to Dietrich Bonhoeffer?

Rev. Robertson, you're no Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Also, church members, whom I love, but who are resisting my request to get all my committees meeting on one night (staggered start times so I can spend some time with each). Look, just because your kids are grown and you don't mind being at the church 3-5 nights a week doesn't make it right.

I'm off to brave the hellatious traffic to go to the mall, Target, etc. I'm sure there will be plenty to rant about after that experience.

I do have one anti-rant though--this morning I woke up to the sound of my daughter singing Amazing Grace.

O,the rants I could make...

Rant 1: Why does everything---government as well as church--have to be so divisively political? To win an argument, do we really have to get personal and call their mothers names? Really, I never liked Mrs. Bush, but that's another story.

Rant 2: Why do Republicans want to ruin my life? {Hey, I did not say anthing about MRs. Bush here!} I am just commenting that (a)they say they want the government off my back, but are willing to let Homeland Security track library usage, video store rents, and credit card usage, (b) they want to lower my taxes which I suppose is to pay for gasoline,(c) they want to take out the "death" tax( estates) which only effects those having disposable-not joint-assets over 1 million, and (d) they tell me they are the Christian party because they don't like abortion and homosexuality, but apparently have no problem with war, lies (need I say Weapons of Mass Destruction), starvation (Africa), and other such terrible things. (Again, no mention of Mrs. Bush!).

Rant 3: Conservatives seem to say, "Everything is either Bill or Hilliary Clinton's fault." I know that the current popularity of saxophones is directly related, but this other stuff, please, everyone knows Mrs. Bush did that.

End of Rant.
Apologize for its length.

OK, I'm back from my errands--5 stores in 3 hours with a 2-year-old--and I'd like to rant against the hapless young man at Costco who rang up a bunch of the next guy's stuff on *my* credit card, and if I'd wanted to the difference credited to my account, I would have had to stand in two additional lines, instead of one line to get a cash refund. I opted for cash.

Then C and I went through the drive-thru at McD's which is a Friday treat sometimes. I ordered her a Happy Meal and when the woman said, "boy or girl?" I almost said boy, because boy happy meal toys are generally cooler. Well, they're actual toys, as opposed to what C got, which is a plastic Barbie bracelet with a big blue gem in it. The bracelet came in a light blue plastic egg-thing that pops up and reveals the bling. C asked, "What's this called?" I said, "What would you like to call it?" She said, "Girl toy." Sigh...

OMG!!!!! Wish I knew how to make those letters larger! and I really mean it!

I had a rant already prepared about the new computer system at my university and how it is making my life a misery....and everyone else, too.

THEN I saw Reverend Mother's link to Pat Robertson quoting Bonhoeffer...and it went right out of my head. I have nothing else to rant about. I am so greatly angered by this man that I cannot think straight. I'm going to go out and walk around the building - I might faint from heat stroke but at least I won't be thinking about HIM.

Panting,

"Visioning" be banned by Holy Scripture and the Book of Order. Surely it is somewhere. Maybe a new translation of the Hebrew/Greek would find that for me. Please????

-heavy sigh - I, the cynic was actually in a good place having just woken up from a 2 hour nap with my 6 month old. But the McDonald's 1950's stereotypical Happy Meal combined with Pat Robertson (not to mention the flashbacks to the horror of ordination exams) has made me ill.

Maybe instead of boy/girl happy meals they should have liberal/conservative happy meals. Conservatives get a Robertson or Mrs. Bush talking doll that says something obnoxious like, "The media says I speak for all Christians." And Liberals get a cold beer to help them forget all their worries... no wait, it's for kids, sorry.
Liberals get a 2000-2008 survival pack complete with ear plugs, cash (to pay our taxes) and a hybrid matchbox toy.

why is doing the right thing what puts so many people in the poor house?

why won't we see our own faults in time to save ourselves?

I'm still hyperventilating over hearing about Pat Robertson quoting Dietrich Bonhoeffer...I'm sure Robertson has never read a word of Bonhoeffer's works in his entire life...one of his evil entourage with above-average literacy for his constituency [rim shot!] must have fed him a quote, out of context.

OK, that's one rant;-)...

Here's another -- a churchy rant. When are some laypeople going to grow up? You know -- the obstructionists in a congregation who are terrified of exegesis or theology more challenging than Sunday-School level, who resist all attempts to change anything, who want the church to always massage their own preferences and, more importantly, prejudices? ARRRGH. (This rant is generated not by my own parish but by a situation I know of elsewhere.) ARRRGH, I say again!

Re Robertson:PH says Robertson is like Bonhoeffer as is like a compassionate conservative...

kathryn-I'm praying you got the loo fixed and are safely away to Greenbelt.

Quotidian Grace - ah, yes, "visioning." I am uncomfortable with that one, like I'm uncomfortable with "fellowshipping" amd "gifting." Why can't we let nouns be nouns and avoid trying to make them into verbs? I'm going to start a support group for violated nouns.

ReverendMother - I did my shopping at the Costco yesterday - the one near the City. So why is it that everyone who has massive full carts must stand in the center of the aisle so no one can pass?

Meanwhile, StrongOpinions' car is acting up (again) and she is taking my toiletries and giving them to Little Mommy to Be...no wonder I'm having a bad hair day!

Expeditus - you are the Prime Ranter!

Happy Meals - how about Crabby meals? We're the ones who really need 'em!

Rant for the day -- smokers.

I'm walking to my car and I see a mom with a couple of school age children coming out of the Staples store with school stuff. Kiddies are animated, Mom is in a good mood....I smiled and thought "Nice"

Then Mom gets everyone in the minivan and LIGHTS UP A FREAKIN' SMOKE!

Aaarrrghhh...

I wanted to go and shake her. I've never smoked, never will and I confess to having zero sympathy for women like this. I know it's supposed to be more addictive than heroin -- but hey, people give up heroin.

I cannot tolerate people who poison their own children with second hand smoke. it's just plain wrong!!!

last week we got in a car accident because this guy was talking on his cell phone -
AND then he gets out of his car, and continues to talk on his cell phone! to the person he was talking to when he hit us! and it wasn't until the end of the exchange of information that he tells the person "hey, i need to take care of something."

Well, it's no longer Friday, but I still have want to rant. For the last two weeks one of my "friends" has been watching my little girl in the mornings before her PM Kindergarten. It's anywhere from 3.5 to 4 hours a day.

Well, at the end of the two weeks I finally got her to tell me how much money she wants for keeping her for the last two weeks and the next week. She wants $5.50 an hour.

Um...Ok... for 4 hours that's $22 bucks. I had called around to the different daycare centers in town and they charge $10 for 4 hours or less per day and I was expecting her to say or maybe a little less. $10 a day is VERY different then $22 a day!

Being the bookkeeper for my job I decided to see what that amounted to. After I pay taxes I take home $6.86 an hour if I pay her $5.50 that means I would only be making 1.36 an hour for the first 4 hours of the day... gee, somethings very wrong with this picture! I can't support myself and family on $1.36 an hour!!! I'm quite offended and mad at this "friend" for demanding so much of my money. And I'm never going to use her again. I'm also mad at myself too for not getting the price up front. I know that she and her boyfriend (who live with his mother) are struggling. She had to take 3 weeks off from her job as one program ended and another began and her boyfriend doesn't have a job at all until he takes some test to be a RN. But I can't supply their whole income and not have enough money to pay my OWN bills, I have a child, I have a mortgage, I have utilites!

I've learned my lesson. I will never just assume that my friends will treat me fairly just because they're my friends.
