Friday Morning the Day Before the Day Before

*We have frost on the ground! Everything looks a bit grey and sparkly!
Here in the Gulf, we expect temps to be a high of 67 in a few hours, too.
Not easy to know what clothing to choose for a day with frost and flip-flops.

*Thanks to all who took the Quiz. Precious Moments wins.

*I'm doing a wedding this morning at Little Church. I refuse most Christmas Day (and 72 hours in either direction) weddings because of past horrors. The worst Christmas Day wedding was almost 20 years ago. The groom gave me a check intended for his ex-wife's support and gave her the envelope with my honorarium. Neither of us was pleased. The next worst wedding included intoxicated family members and a giant interruption of MY time. Let's leave Christmas Day to the Baby. Get married on another date...

*Elderly people usually die after the holidays. Our local paper carries too many obits of older people and has since the hurricane. Many died after being evacuated away to their children's homes or nursing homes in more stable areas. This makes me so sad. Consider making it to your elder years then having your home destroyed. After that, the last months or years of your independence is taken from you. Rats, double rats.

*Shhhhhhh....found a packet of furry toy mice for Whistle and Fish at a Walmart in Alabama. Our local PetSmart doesn't carry the furry ones, only fabric. W and F are fans of the furry toy mice. I hope the boys don't mind the bright colors of the Alabamian Wall Martian mice. Their Christmas stocking will be filled with not-found-in-nature mice.

*At a dinner party last night, the men (not LH who has better taste) began singing "I'll Have A Blue Christmas" Elvis style. Spare me.

*If I don't get to the grocery store today, my family will riot. I need the fixins for the Christmas Breakfast Casserole. For those of you who don't eat grits, shame on you! Sausage (bulk), cheese and grits all together in a beautiful casserole dish is great eat'in.

Pray for all of us,

St. Casserole

Just to prove that I haven't forgotten my Southern roots, our Christmas morning breakfast is also Baked Cheese Grits (and if I added sausage, my Yankee husband might actually like it!).

I'm doing cinnamon rolls, ham and eggs for our Christmas breakfast. Thinking about doing a frittata.
We'll see on Christimas morn.

Cinnamon buns, courtesy of my dear Mother In Law. Of course, you have to go to the early morning Julotta service (mostly in Swedish) to truly deserve them. MIL will make TWO pans of them, so we can stuff ourselves to oblivion. Yum.

Christmas grits cassarole here too.

Mini-rant: Babs and I were watching Rachel Ray on the Food Network this week. She made creole shrimp and grits BUT instead of using grits she used quick-cooking polenta. Now that is just WRONG!

We also will have sweet rolls with orange icing. Which reminds me, Babs and I need to get started on those...

Swedish pancakes for us---cooked by my dad.
I am so not a southerner but I really love grits and wish I knew how to make them right. I only eat them in restaurants.

I guess I'm going to need to assemble it the night before, since we have to open presents, dress and get to church by 9. Have I mentioned that my children have never been early risers on Christmas morning? Ever?

Awww, MAN! I LOVE grits, and my DH will not eat them. And so neither will my DS. It is my favorite Christmas morning breakfast, too, with the cheese & sausage.

But you know what? I might make me some, just for me! Let them eat eggs and cinnamon rolls!

Haha!

Church is not until 11 on Christmas Day, thankfully. :)

We had our Christmas breakfast this morning, since the relatives are already here, and Sunday morning is going to be jump-up-shove-the-turkey-into-the-oven-run-to-church-run-back-home-before-it's-overcooked. I discovered this fabulous recipe for banana pancakes with caramel-banana syrup in last month's Bon Appetit, and after our first taste test DH and I agreed it would be perfect for Christmas breakfast. It's like bananas Foster pancakes! You can find it on line at epicurious.com. (P.S. If you can't get self-rising flour, just add 3 tsp. baking powder and 1 tsp. salt to 2 c. all-purpose flour.)

Thinking of you and those around you this Christmas, St. Casserole.

We'll have muffins, fruit and an egg strata for breakfast, saving the cheese grits for the traditional grillards for dinner.

Polenta as a substitute for grits? This is an outrage!
Grillards on Christmas Day? Girl! You were raised right. Recipe to follow? Please?
The orange breakfast rolls make me recall Christmas mornings as a child. Ahhhhh!
Bear? Come have Christmas Casserole with us.
We have to be on the road to church at 9am. Sunday morning. I assume I can get everyone there on time...

We have to be out the door at 8:50 a.m. I've bagged the grits casserole. They'll get it one day this week before I fly away. Coffee cake will have to do this time.

And by the way--
Merry Christmas!

I DID make the grits! I know you were dying to know. They were delicious. DS ate a lot and DH tried them but didn't like. That's okay, it wasn't his present, it was mine. :)

Please, somebody, what ARE grits??? They always come up in American books (I got "The Secret Life of Bees" in my stocking, so am finally catching up with the rest of the world) and I've never known...
Not much time for Christmas breakfast here...I had some muesli on the run between the end of the 8.00 and the start of the 10.00...but our Boxing Day breakfast (26th) was pain chocolates and croissants, and very yummy too!
Oh...and we prayed specially for all of you at Midnight, St Cass...Hugs xx
